Making Plans

For Christmas from my DH, I received "Gardening with Chickens" by Jessi Bloom. We let our chickens free range in our entire backyard and over the years the yard has changed dramatically. Some for the good and some for the bad. The good parts; no more dandelions, less bugs, the grass gets fertilized, and aerated. The bad; holes, patches of grass missing, finding new things in the yard that the chickens dug up, and poop everywhere! I keep my gardens fenced off from the chickens because I know they will tear it apart, but I am sure this is due to boredom, lack of places to hide and find things. My hope is this book will help to guide me in creating a backyard that I can grow my families fruit and veggies in, plus a place for our chickens to roam freely throughout the yard without getting into trouble.

Welcome to my busy life!

I honestly have no idea what to say here. I have tried numerous times trying to convey the things that interest me most. I guess I should start with, where I live. My husband and I live in the Pacific Northwest in western Washington. We moved here over a decade ago and fell in love. It is so beautiful where we live, seeing the mountains every day, and that it is always green. We do get snow on occasion and most times it melts away just as quickly as it came. The house we bought sits on a nice little piece of land that was a complete blank slate with the exception of 2 big pine trees a stones throw away from the house. Since living here we have had 3 girls and added to our landscape; a strawberry patch, a garden, and a chicken coop. All of this is a work in progress, learning experience. I have so many ideas of what I want to add to our homestead. Eventually I want to get our greenhouse up, a new chicken coop built, our veggie garden redone to include irrigation, raised beds, and a better fence enclosure, a play area for our kids, and a couple flower gardens put in. I will be documenting all the new projects going on around our homestead.

I look forward to writing again soon! See you next time!!
